Sicuro were tasked by Horizon Construction to provide advanced security solutions for a residential building project in the centre of Chelmsford.
Challenge
The project encompassed the building of 14 modern 2-bed apartments in this popular part of Essex’s county town. The construction was undertaken by Brodie Property Group, a well-known Home Counties Developer. As a large-scale residential project, Horizon Construction was concerned about the vulnerability of the site, and contacted Tim Levi, Sicuro’s National Account Manager, for assistance. We conducted a thorough site security assessment at the beginning of the project to reveal the weaknesses in the site. This highlighted the difficulties in securing the works, particularly at the rear of the site.
The threats to this individual project included:
- Vacant site – the project spanned the Christmas period where building works halted and presented a security risk due to lack of personnel onsite.
- Vandalism – anyone who wants to cause damage to a construction site may try to break into the site and tamper with scaffolding, graffiti or fly tip in the area. This can cause project delays which can cost thousands of pounds.
- Theft – criminals are attracted to construction sites due to the value of equipment and raw materials that are left onsite. These are often difficult for the police to trace so therefore make an excellent profit on the black market.
Solution
Following our site security assessment, we advised the client that our wireless video verification service would provide a complete surveillance system over the entire site. This worked by installing an advanced wireless alarm panel and connecting it to our external video verification cameras. These run on lithium batteries to power the system, which is the ideal solution for sites which don’t have any mains power or internet connectivity. The batteries can last for up to 4 years, based on average conditions which was more than enough time for this 1-year project.
With inbuilt cameras in the PIRs, any footage of a security incident will be immediately sent to our NSI Gold monitoring station where the event will be checked for authenticity. In the event of a genuine breach, our trained SIA approved responders are dispatched immediately to the construction site to confront any intruders onsite.
In addition to this 24/7 monitoring service, we also provided a drive-by service at random intervals during the Christmas period to check for any signs of an intrusion. The presence of physical security guards in the area is often noted by any criminals who are considering an intrusion, and often dissuades them.
