Sicuro recently took on the construction security of the Havens Hospice charity in Southend in a project which was very close to our hearts. Our Managing Director, Neil Sweeney, has a close relationship to this important local charity after the sad loss of his stepfather, Rodney Bond in 2010. Rodney was under the care of Havens Hospice following his cancer diagnosis and as a result Neil maintained contact with CEO Steve Smith of the charity.

Challenge

Sicuro provided essential construction security solutions during a period of approximately 4-6 weeks when the hospice would have been otherwise left without any security in place.

The property which houses Havens Hospice Charity was in a transition period following possession by the primary contractor firm, Barnes Construction. The extensive building work at the hospice had been underway for 65 weeks, following £17.2 million development works to create the new Fair Havens Hospice. This project comprised a 16-bed inpatient unit, a day hospice, and capacity for family support, wellbeing and charity administrative offices. In February, this incredible transformation was handed over to CEO Steve Smith of Havens Hospice, marking a new era for hospice care for those in South East Essex.

Sicuro delivered our advanced security solutions during the handover from Barnes Construction, and also advised on an ongoing security strategy for the future of the hospice.

Solution

Initially, we conducted a thorough review of the construction site, and provided Havens Hospice with a comprehensive report detailing our recommendations. Following this, Sicuro supplied and installed wireless internal video verification alarms, which ensured all access points to the property were fully covered. The alarm systems are monitored 24/7 by qualified and highly experienced security specialists at the BSIA Gold Arc Monitoring station. The project was also supported by our national response partner Securitas who dispatch security agents in the event that an intrusion or breach is detected.

Additionally, we erected prominent ‘Beware CCTV’ signage around the perimeter of the construction works, which act as an effective deterrent to any would-be criminals operating in the area. The signs are unmissable and the threat of having their image caught in high-resolution 4k footage is often enough to send most opportunists on their way.
