Project Description

Sector: Construction Security

Customer: Harrabin Construction Ltd

Site: Coventry Cathedral

Sicuro are delighted to be delivering security to Harrabin Construction Ltd who have won the tender to provide extensive building works to Coventry Cathedral. The construction of the new pavilion annexe includes the creation of 12 step-free accessible toilets, a lift to the lower floor café, and a community education centre.

This is a high-profile project as the result of a £3.5 million fundraising programme, in preparation for events due to be held at the cathedral as part of Coventry’s City of Culture celebrations of 2021. With extensive coverage in local and national media, securing the site for the duration of the construction works is a top priority.

Although the majority of the construction work is focused on the new pavilion, the work also involves relocating Swedish windows from their original position on the exterior wall of the cathedral. With multiple areas of the cathedral at risk during this 36-week project, Sicuro were tasked with providing security at a site wide level to ensure that this historic building, as well as Harrabin’s equipment and raw materials, were protected during this time.

This is undoubtedly a prestigious project to work on, but actually the risks to construction companies are similar regardless of the size, scope or heritage of a site. Any type of building work can be a target for thieves, vandals and even squatters. The range of crimes committed on a construction site can include the theft of valuable construction equipment such as excavators or bowsers, along with raw materials including scaffolding. Criminals recognise there is an opportunity to make money here, by selling such items on the black market for a considerable profit. Other crimes include vandalism such as graffiti or even arson.

Pubs require robust security to safeguard their staff, customers and assets of the business, including the premises themselves, whether they’re vacant or currently trading. Whilst everyone loves a good night out, problems can arise when alcohol is involved. From fights, drug dealing, and customers being removed from a pub, a security system is vital to oversee smooth operations and as a proactive defence against thieves who could target the property after hours. A reduced police presence on UK streets means that pub landlords and owners are reliant on the effectiveness of a high-quality security system to monitor the premises.

During the pandemic, the security needs of pubs have become even more complex, as premises in Tier 3 and 4 have closed. This means that the premises are essentially vacant which makes them a prime target for thieves, vandals and even squatters.

As such, there are multiple benefits of a security solution investment:

  • Security is provided at all times, regardless of the progression of the pandemic and local tier restrictions in place
  • Staff and customers will feel safe that there is a secondary level of protection if events get out of hand in the venue
  • Surveillance can be offered to cover every inch of the building from the main bar area, to the toilets and stairwells
  • Reduction in insurance claims

Following communication with Harrabin, Sicuro carried out an extensive review of the construction site, to identify any vulnerabilities in the set-up and develop a bespoke strategy to mitigate against the risk of intrusion. The area of focus was the building works in the lower carpark, which was a main access point, in addition to other insecure zones around the perimeter of the cathedral.

Following our review, Harrabin were happy to agree to our recommendation of installing seven external motion viewers around the site. These were monitored from our remote security station, who are on standby 24/7 to watch footage of any potential breach or incident taking place on site. Where an intrusion is detected, an SIA-approved responder is dispatched to the site to deal with the trespassers.

With cameras covering the full site, and extra protection around the car park access point, this provided peace of mind to Harrabin Construction, as well as Coventry Cathedral that the site was fully protected for the duration of the works.
